Common questions

Does the name have to start with the prescribed syllable?

Traditionally yes — the namakaran syllable links the child to their birth star. Many families choose the formal/ritual name by the syllable and use a separate everyday name. It is ultimately your family's choice.

What is a pada and why does it matter?

Each nakshatra is divided into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′. The pada the Moon occupied at birth picks the exact starting syllable, so two babies of the same nakshatra can have different naming letters.

Do I need the exact birth time?

For naming, the time helps because the pada — and therefore the syllable — can change within a nakshatra. Use the most accurate birth time you have, and confirm the final name with your purohit.
