Meaning & mythology

Shravana means 'hearing'. Ruled by Vishnu and associated with the three steps that measured the cosmos, it is the nakshatra of listening, learning and transmitting knowledge. Tradition associates Shravana with scholarship, devotion to learning, a love of stories and tradition, good counsel, fame through knowledge and the wisdom that comes from truly listening.

Naming syllables (Namakaran)

If a child is born under Shravana nakshatra, tradition suggests a name beginning with one of these syllables, chosen by the Moon's pada (quarter) at birth: Ju, Je, Jo, Gha — one syllable for each of the four padas.

These are the classical syllables; regional traditions vary slightly. For ritual decisions, confirm with your family panchanga or purohit.
